Meet the troublemaker that started it all. Yes, my madre, Bernice.
I realized as I started to write this that Respoke began long, long ago from the seeds of inspiration sewn by my mother. Bernice is truly a creative master at making something out of nothing – everyone she has fed at her table would agree. Sometimes it was simply an abundance of a single ingredient that needed to be used up (hullo zucchini!) or a limitation (can’t get to town for that thing). Either way, she always made something out of – what most would deem – nothing. She is resourceful and, although she would never dare to call herself one, she is an artist. My mother is the picture of reclamation and strength (and style!).
Respoke is the end of one journey and the beginning of another. It’s reclaiming old, sometimes worn – even stained and sun-faded materials – and reimagining them into their new purpose. It’s as exclusive and as extraordinary as that worn leather jacket that no longer serves as a coat, but now becomes part of a handbag.
It’s appreciation for that which has come before, and those who have come before. The journey continues…
